Sebagai sebuah negara persekutuan, mahu tidak mahu, kita perlu meraikan tarikh berkenaan, sebagaimana kita juga mengharapkan supaya Hari Malaysia pada 16 September turut diraikan oleh seluruh rakyat Malaysia.

Namun, disedari atau tidak, Hari Malaysia seolah-olah hanya relevan untuk rakyat di Sabah dan Sarawak, selepas Singapura tidak lagi bersama-sama Malaysia mulai 1965.

Keputusan atau langkah menubuhkan Malaysia 57 tahun lalu, umpama keputusan dua keluarga yang hendak bersatu melalui satu perkahwinan.

Jadi, sebagai sebuah keluarga, hari ulang tahun anggota keluarga lain tentu perlu diraikan bersama-sama, apatah lagi kita sudah hidup di bawah satu bumbung yang sama.

Kita harus bersikap realistik dan rasional, dengan tidak memainkan sentimen nasionalisme kenegerian atau kewilayahan yang sempit.

Sebab, sebarang sentimen negatif ke arah itu tidak menguntungkan, malah memudaratkan wawasan dan aspirasi untuk melihat sebuah negara bangsa yang hebat.

Kita tidak harus mudah terperangkap oleh perjuangan atau pemikiran dan ideologi individu atau puak tertentu yang menganjurkan Hari Kebangsaan tidak harus diraikan oleh rakyat Sabah atau Sarawak.

Tentu amat malang jika rakyat terperangkap dalam naratif sedemikian. Usaha kita untuk membina sebuah negara bangsa tentu akan terjejas, sedangkan kita sepatutnya melangkah ke hadapan sebagai sebuah persekutuan.

Justeru, sebarang usaha untuk menyemai bibit dan naratif yang tidak sesuai dengan aspirasi pemimpin negara, tidak harus dilayan. Kita perlu menyemai semangat kebangsaan, patriotisme dan perpaduan dalam kalangan rakyat pelbagai kaum di negara ini.

Meskipun bagi segelintir rakyat, kemerdekaan tidak ada maknanya, tetapi kita perlu ingat bahawa kemerdekaan memungkinkan kita bukan sahaja bebas daripada cengkaman penjajah, tetapi juga menentukan nasib dan hala tuju negara serta keluarga.

Kemerdekaan dari perspektif sekarang dan generasi muda mungkin tidak lagi sama dengan sudut pandangan generasi terdahulu.  Malah, kemerdekaan versi saya dan anda kemungkinan tidak sama, malah jauh berbeza.

Sebab, sejarah, latar belakang, wawasan, nilai, falsafah, dan aspirasi kita tidak sama. Namun satu hal adalah pasti: Kita mahu memastikan hidup kita aman, damai, bahagian, harmoni, bersatu padu dan berjaya dalam semua segi.
